A Celebration of Craft: The First Lake Makers Fair at Waters & Acland
This summer marked an exciting milestone for our creative community — the first ever Lake Makers Fair, held right outside the Waters & Acland Fine Furniture School workshops in Staveley.
The fair brought together a vibrant mix of local craftspeople, artists, and designer makers — including many of our 24/25 Designer Maker Course students, who proudly showcased their final pieces to an enthusiastic crowd.
With a steady stream of visitors throughout the day, the event was buzzing with conversation, curiosity, and appreciation for craftsmanship. From fine furniture and woodwork to ceramics, textiles, and printmaking, the range of work on display reflected the incredible creativity thriving here in the Lake District.
A Day of Inspiration and Connection

It was a joy to see our students sharing their work with the public — answering questions, explaining their design processes, and receiving well-deserved praise (and even a few sales!). For many, this was their first public exhibition as independent designer makers — a proud moment marking the transition from study to professional practice.
The fair also drew an inspiring community of local artisans and makers, creating a real sense of connection between emerging and established creatives. The lively atmosphere, beautiful craftsmanship, and supportive crowd made it a day to remember.
A Community Effort
A huge thank you goes to our former students Martin and Nico (@studiofortier) for organising such a fantastic event. Their hard work and vision made the fair not only possible but truly special.
We’re also incredibly grateful to everyone who took part — from the talented exhibitors who brought their work to share, to the visitors and patrons whose enthusiasm filled the courtyard with energy and encouragement all day long.
Looking Ahead
As our 24/25 Designer Maker Course comes to an end, the Lake Makers Fair felt like the perfect celebration of everything our students have achieved this year — creativity, craftsmanship, and community spirit in full display.
We’re already looking forward to the next one! Keep an eye on @lakemakersfair and our website for updates on future fairs and events.
Here’s to many more gatherings celebrating design, skill, and the joy of making.
